With some electronics more power is used by powering on and off between frequent usage, and it decreases the life of the product. Is this the case with LCD TVs?

  1. No. Turn it off when you don't use it. It will last longer and consumes less power.

  2. There is no cut and dried answer to this. All TVs use phantom or standby power to instantly power on and sets vary widely in how much power they consume in this standby mode. You might do some research on the model you are considering if you are worried about overall power consumption.

That said, the standby mode actually helps to increase the life of the set, as it is not fully powering off and back on. Your set definitely uses less power when turned "off" than when on. I would turn the set on when you watch it, and turn it off when you don't without being overly concerned about it.

  3. With modern TV, it is always best to turn power off if the set will be off for more than about 10-15 minutes.  Powering up and down is not harmful to the solid state circuits and lamps of modern sets (unlike the old tube sets).  In addition, I have my set on a powerline switch so that it is "unplugged" if it is going to be off for long periods (more than 4 hours).  The standby power does add up, even though it is small, it is on all the time the set is plugged in.
