LCD TV sound

I have a servere hearing problem and so I listen to my TV through a set of wireless headphones.
This has worked fine for several years with my old television but I recently bought a new one from Tesco's and found that i had a problem.
When listening to a television programme the sound is fine, but when I play a film on the DVD player the picture shows on the screen and the soundtrack comes out of the television speakers, but the signal that comes from the two phono out sockets on the back of the television (to which my headphones are connected) is the soundtrack from last TV channel I was watching.
The head phone socket on the back of the television is too weak a signal to power the head phone transmitter.
I thought at first there must be an internal fault with the set so I exchanged it for another one but experienced the same problem.
Believing this to be the fault of the design I then went to, Comet with the intention of buying another set, there to salesman explained to me that the problem was due to the television not being set up correctly and that there is a menu where the correct AV imput needs to be selected.
Despite this they were unable to demonstrate to me how to do this after 40 minutes of playing around with the remote control.
Needless to say Tesco's has no technical helpline worthy of the name.
Any assistance would be greatly valued. Thank you, Richard
