Question:

LCD and plasma differences?

I've seen a heavily reduced plasma TV, I already own a couple of LCD TV's which are all well and good. Is plasma that significantly better? I've found LCD has a slow response time sometimes, is plasma similar.

I know the differences so no pages from wikipedia, what I want really is some information from people who own both and information about response time etc.

  1. Plasmas don't have problems with RESPONSE TIMES because of the nature of the materials used to create a picture....

However they can burn an image into them, so you must avoid pausing the game or DVD and operate your TV set differently than the LCD panel TV sets.....

The Plus is they are fast...the minus is they burn....

A couple of NOTES : They are actually LESS FRAGILE than an LCD and you DON'T have to keep them Upright ! That's only to prevent the glass from shattering during tranportation with other cargo (Trucking companys take note!)

You can lay it down in the back of your vehicle with a couple quilts under it and drive it safely anywhere except off-roading....

I do it ALL the time, for the last 5 years and never had a problem....

  2. I have a Panasonic 42" 1080p Plasma and a Samsung 46" 1080p LCD.

Both TVs have their pros and cons.  The LCD's biggest con is the refresh rate (response time).  My model's refresh rate is 8ms, which is supposed to be good, but still results in the "blurring" when watching certain programs.  The newer models have a refresh rate of 4ms @ 120 Hz which is supposed to be a significant improvement.

You will NOT notice the blurring effect in plasma TVs due to the way its technology works.  The downside of plasmas is that it's not ideal for bright rooms, that it requires much more power consumption, and that it is more fragile (and should remain in its upright position when moving it).

Bottom Line: you will notice that fast moving objects, particularly in sports broadcasts, are much more clearer on a Plasma TV than on an LCD and produces no noticeable blur.

Burn-in issues with plasmas have been improved over the last few generations of models by slightly moving the displayed pixels without being noticedable to the human eye.  Networks are also now starting to move their logos while airing a TV show.  One must be sure to avoid being negligent by leaving their plasma on over an extended period of time, mainly when playing video games and using a PC-hookup.

    Brands to go with:

    Plasmas - Pioneer or Panosonic

    LCDs - Samsung or Sony
