  1. CRTs are heavier, require more power, and give off more radiation.  They were used on older glass cockpit aircraft since the technology wasn't in LCDs yet to make them visible in sunlight and to give them good refresh rate.

LCDs still don't have as good of refresh rate as CRTs but for aviation applications it is good enough.  Also LCDs tend to have a smaller viewing angle.  This could be a factor if the F/O is cross checking instruments with the captain or vice-versa.

  2. There aren't any advantages to CRTs today.

Early flat panels had some issues with viewing angles, contrast, and brightness, but these problems have largely been resolved.  The last CRTs to be superior to flat panels were those used for high-end video and photo work, which obviously doesn't apply to to aviation.  Cost might be an issue, but I'm not sure that there is any significant difference in cost between flat panels and CRTs for avionics these days (other parts of the system are much more expensive).

For me I would prefer the LCD. Even though we cant see the screen from an angle not directly in front of you, it is still very nice because it doesnt use alot of power nor does it Flicker.
