LCM (Least Common Multiple) ?

I am currently writing a textbook for college level algebra. I am designing this book for the students as oppose to other textbooks that are designed for the faculty. This book is intended for college level students and perhaps advanced high school students.

I am working on the LCM (Least Common Multipe)section, and would like to know what you think of the following examples:

Let me know what you think? Is it helpful ?

If you have suggestions please let me know.

Thank you.

  1. Hi, just my opinion:

At first glance, the concept is not easy to grasp.  I'm working in reverse since I already know the concept.  But if imagining trying to learn the concept without prior knowledge, this graph wouldn't necessarily have aided me.

It might be easier if you actually break down the two examples into algebra forms in the lower term, then comparing them (maybe in colors for the commons).  Finally reducing them afterward.

    good luck

  2. I did study your graphs and breaking down larger numbers into smaller factors.   I understand the principle.

But, what I do not understand, is why you do not start out with a definition, what you are ending up with.  I see numbers, but don't know why you seek those numbers.

For most students, I think, the reason they do not like math, and do not strive to learn it's rules (and you are using rules there, even if you have not explained them), is they fail to see the importance of the operations.

Why would anyone ever have to use LCM's?

If people had a practical word problem, one that people actually have to solve in life, then perhaps students would put forth greater effort to actually solve these problems with your methods as shown.

When you don't know where you are going, or why, then why start?

That is the key to better achievement in any field, IMO.

  3. Maybe its just because im not in the same place as you but doesnt LCM stand for LOWEST COMMON MULTIPLE. I know they both mean the same things but LEAST just sounds wierd to me...
