I have a display that requires 5V DC to power it up, how can I reduce 12V DC ( auto battery) to 5V easily and get the parts needed from radio shack? I looked at AA/AAA batteries but they are 1.5V camera batteries are 3V so using them together adds up to 6V

  1. The easiest way to go about this would be to use a 5v regulator, they are quite cheap very small (compact) and will provide regulated power from either your 12v car battery or a 6v battery pack. Just check what current your LCD display uses, it shouldn't be anywhere near 1 amp but you can always bolt a random peace of metal to the regulator to keep it cool, just for fun.

    hope this helps, good luck!

example, radio shack Catalog #: 276-1770

    (+5V Fixed-Voltage Regulator 7805)
