LET Q School 2013: Ariya Jutanugarn seizes lead in fourth round
Amateur Ariya Jutanugarn ramped up pressure on rivals in the fourth round of Lalla Aicha Tour School 2013, as she grabbed a three-stroke lead after shooting a 65 on Sunday.
The five-round LET (Ladies European Tour) qualifying tournament has entered into a crucial stage, with the top 66 players and ties getting ready to battle it out on Monday morning.
The top-30 players and ties will earn the LET card at the conclusion of the final round on Monday evening.
Jutanugarn, who hails from Thailand, surprised rivals in the fourth round as she made a quick charge, boosting her score to further cement position on the leaderboard.
The young gun managed to tighten her grip on the match from the third round that saw her post an explosive 64. She stood at the number one position at the end of the third round on Saturday.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round on Sunday evening, the Thai star said that she had to push herself to the limit in order to gain the upper hand over rivals. She pointed out the
course is tricky as some holes required better-than-average putting.
“The course is not easy but I think I got lucky because I’ve hit my irons perfect this week,” said the tournament leader.
“Every day my irons, I hit them so close, but today I missed some short putts one or two times. I had a three putt on a par five, 13. Generally I think everything is very good and I’ll just
keep going like today”.
The competition has been tough since the start of the Q School, but amateurs appear to have taken over the leaderboard, having snatched the top three positions.
English Emily Taylor, an amateur, is standing three strokes behind the leader Jutanugarn. Taylor got off to a dazzling start to her campaign, shooting a 69 in the first round.
The English amateur then kept the momentum rolling all through the way, posting solid scores in each round. She shot a massive 66 in the second round to edge closer to the top.
Another amateur seizing one of the top-three spots is Bonita Bredenhann. Bredenhann, a South African native, carded an overall 272 in the four rounds to grab the third position.
