Question:

LG brand LCD TV contrast ratio question?

I can buy an LG, 42 ", LCD TV with 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 1080P for around $1350.00. I see another model with the same specs except a contrast ratio of 15,000:1 going for $1250.00.

Should I get the cheaper model? Does the difference in these contrast ratios make a big difference in picture quality?

Any advice would be useful.

  1. Unless you are going to watch in a darkened room, you will not see much difference.  Note those are "dynamic" contrast ratios, in which the screen lights are dimmed for low-light pictures.  The actual contrast within the picture is probably the same for both sets (about 5,000:1).

  2. There is not even a standard method for measuring those numbers and every manufacturer probably does it differently. I'd say you may not even be able to tell the difference if they are side by side. go look at them in stores if you are that worried about saving or spending $100.

  3.   I noticed those specifications also with some other TVs besides LG when I was looking for a TV. But, I just couldn't actually see a difference.  Since, I let my eyes be the final judge, I just ended up "blowing off" that specification - along with quite a few others - and just bought the TV that looked better and was easier to set up and adjust to my liking.
