LGU CEO says strong field set for Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) Shona Malcolm has said that she is pretty happy that prominent players have confirmed their commitment for the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012,
which will help the officials make the event more special in coming years.
Malcolm was speaking to the media about what she thinks of a strong roster packed with most of the top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars. The LGU CEO said that the officials have been
pretty concerned about the strength of the field, but now with the major battle set to begin in a few days, things have become clearer.
Malcolm said that the presence of European, particularly, North English players, has increased the interest of local fans, and it is expected that people will flock to see their favourite players perform in
large numbers.
Current world number one Yani Tseng, who is struggling to regain her lost glory, is the defending champion of the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012. Tseng carded an overall 272 to grab the coveted title. She
scored a stunning 66 in the second and third round each, ramping up pressure on her nearest rivals.
Malcolm said that it is a good sign that most of the top-ranked stars are in the field, but the player who is most likely to steal the show at Wirral is Paula Creamer of the United States.
“The field is really shaping up for the final Major of the year and after the conclusion of the Open Championship on Sunday, we hope the North West of England will now look to the Ricoh Women’s British Open
for their next fix of world class golf,” The CEO shared.
“Paula’s early foray to Hoylake this weekend shows her determination to win this great Championship and we have been delighted to hear her positive feedback on the course”.
Malcolm said that another favourite contender for the major tournament is South Korean Na Yeon Choi. She said that Choi has been phenomenal in some of the past editions of the tournament, which will help the
South Korean golfer perform well.
“We also look forward to welcoming Na Yeon Choi who has featured on the leaderboard the past three Championships,” she said.
