LGU removes Lisa Maguire from Curtis Cup players list
The Curtis Cup has gathered added excitement after the reselection of Charley Hull, but the omission of Lisa Maguire has triggered intense criticism from the current and former LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) players.
Analysts said that fans and players have appreciated the decision Ladies Golf Union has taken to allow Hull to play the Cup.
However, they are extremely disappointed after the omission of Maguire from the field of Great Britain & Ireland.
The Great Britain & Ireland is set to face the United States in a tough battle scheduled to be staged from June 8 to 10, at The Nairn Golf Club Scotland.
Hull’s participation in the Curtis Cup, experts said, is going to give the much-needed confidence to the players of the Great Britain & Ireland, as they have been winless in the last 7 editions.
On the other hand, Lisa Maguire was getting ready to prove her worth in the prestigious event until she came to know that she is no longer in the squad.
Officials of the Ladies Golf Union (LGU) said that there is a plausible reason behind the omission of the 17-year-old Irish.
However, observers and fans are keen to point out that the willingness of Hull to rejoin the Curtis Cup was the main reason for the LGU officials to remove Maguire’s name from the list.
The Head of Golf operations for the LGU, Susan Simpson, said that the Union has clear rules in place, which require players to follow them in order to find a spot on the team.
She said that each player wishing to play the Curtis Cup was supposed to show up at the team trial, which is also mentioned in the undertaking of players.
She said Hull had already given the nod to attend the team trial scheduled at the Nairn. She said that if Maguire had attended the team trial, things would have been different for her.
"She won't be selected because all the players signed an undertaking to attend the team trial in March and, on the basis that she is not available for that, she won't be available for selection for the match," Susan Simpson clarified
"We made it plain to the players that if they didn't play in the training session they wouldn't play in the match. They signed an agreement".
