LIVE – Australia v South Africa: 2nd Test – Australia strike early on day four – Match Update

Australia struck early on day four of the second Test against South Africa at the New Wanderers, Johannesburg in South Africa on Sunday, November 20, 2011.

The home team ended day three in a commanding position with 229 runs on the board and just three wickets down in their second innings. They would have hoped to stretch their overall lead to more than 350, but struggled to keep wickets in tact at start of
play today.

Middle-order batsman AB de Villiers was the first man to be dismissed in the morning. He played well yesterday and was involved in a 147-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Hashim Amla.

However, de Villiers was unable to get going today and was sent back to the pavilion after adding just three runs to his overnight score of 70. He struck 10 fours and one massive six before being caught in the slips cordon by Australia’s skipper Michael
Clarke off the bowling of teenager Pat Cummins.

Just 12 runs later, Ashwell Prince was also sent back to the pavilion. He was extremely unlucky, getting run-out after scoring just two runs. He stuttered at the start and sacrificed his wicket eventually for the set batsman at the other end.

Amla might have survived the run-out, but he lost the focus from the game and was deceived by a slower delivery from Mitchell Johnson. The ball bounced a bit more than normal and took the outside edge of the bat, carrying to the wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.

The stylish right-handed batsman would have been livid with himself, but led the fight back for his side in the second innings, scoring 105 runs with the help of 14 boundaries.

The fall of three quick wickets left South Africa’s wicketkeeper batsman Mark Boucher alone with the tail.

However, the veteran keeper was unable to make an impression and was dismissed after contributing 13 runs to the total. He edged the ball from spinner Nathan Lyon straight to the hands of slip fielder Shane Watson, who made no mistake completing the catch.

South Africa lost seven wickets for 266 runs on the board and will now look to set a target of at least 300 for the opposition. They had a first innings deficit of 30 runs, which might turn out to be the difference at the end of the Test match.
