Sri Lanka reached 250 runs for the loss of four wickets against Australia until lunch on the third day’s play of the final Test of the three-match series at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo on Sunday, September 18, 2011.
The hosts still trail by 66 runs, but have six wickets remaining in their first innings. They are in a must win situation, as losing the final Test will cost them the series, considering Australia lead the series by 1-0.
The biggest worry for the home team will be their struggling lower-order. Apart from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AD-Mathews-c913, others have not been able to make a solid impression down the order in the entire series.
However, Sri Lanka’s skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691 demoted himself to number five for this Test and might score some runs in his new position. He had been struggling to perform at the top of the order against the new ball, but things might change for him
this time around.
Sri Lanka started their day on 166 for the loss of two wickets and the match was evenly poised at that stage. Openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hettige-Don-Rumesh-Lahiru-Thirimanne-c63124 were the batsmen dismissed after scoring 46 and 28 in their respective outings.
The important thing for the home team was that their most dependable batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397 were present at the crease at the start of day three.
However, the pair failed to make a big impression today and got out after scoring half-centuries in their respective outings. They collected 101 runs for the third wicket partnership before Jayawardene was sent back to the pavilion after adding 51 runs to
the total.
The stylish right-handed player got a faint edge to an out swinger from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BJ-Haddin-c1170.
Sangakkara looked good in the middle, but was unable to score a big one for his side. He was almost dismissed in the same manner as Jayawardene, edging the ball to the hands of the Kangaroos’ wicketkeeper.
The veteran left-handed batsman scored 79 runs in his outing. At the end of the first session’s play, Dilshan and Mathews were unbeaten on 29 and 15 respectively.
