Bolstered by half-centuries from Sandun Weerakkody and wicketkeeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella, the Sri Lanka Under-19s managed to set the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 Under-19s a daunting 245-run chase in the second semi-final of the Asian Cricket Council Under-19s Asia Cup,
being played at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur today on June 29.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first, opening their innings with Pabasara Waduge (45) and Shehan Fernando (18), both of whom established a 39-run foundation for their side. The latter was sent back to the pavilion in the 11th over by
Baba Aparajith, and Sebastian Perera (3) who followed, was not able to contribute much in terms of runs, dismissed lbw by Vikas Mishra in the 16th over.
With the team faltering at 55 for 2, Angelo Jayasinghe (26) stepped in to the rescue, partnering with Waduge for a 34-run stand which got their side up to 89, after which Aparajith struck once again to claim the wicket of Waduge in the 27th over.
Weerakkody (73) was next up to bat, and his 32-run stand with Jayasinghe upped the team’s total to 121 by the 34th over of the innings, after which some clumsy running resulted in Jayasinghe being run out by Akshdeep Nath.
What followed, however, was a colossal 5th wicket 113-run partnership between Weerakkody and Dickwella (66), and the combined efforts of the duo brought the team total up to 234 by the 49th over.
By this point, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harmeet-Singh-c1533 finished with figures of 2 for 54, while Aparajith
was the clear star, claiming 2 for 29, with an economy rate of 2.90.
The last over, bowled by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sandeep-Sharma-c88505, saw Weerakkody dismissed on the first ball while attempting a reverse shot. However, Lahiru Madushanka (6) and Pulina Tharanga (2) chipped in with last-over contributions to get their side up to a substantial 244
at the expense of 7 wickets by the end of 50 overs.
