LIVE – South Africa v Australia: 2nd Test – South Africa all out for 339 – Match Update

South Africa were all out for 339 runs in their second innings of the second Test against Australia at the New Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday, November 20, 2011.

The hosts have gained an overall lead of 309 runs and will be confident of defending this total with the bowling they possess.

Hashim Amla was the stand out performer for his side in this innings, scoring 105 runs. He got excellent support from middle-order batsman AB de Villiers, who contributed 73 runs to the total.

Earlier, the Proteas started their innings with a 30-run first innings deficit. Openers Graeme Smith and Jacques Rudolph guided the team into lead with a 40-run partnership before the latter was sent back to the pavilion after scoring 24 runs.

The home team’s skipper Smith was also unable to make most of the start to his innings and was dismissed after contributing 36 runs to the total. He was followed by veteran Jacques Kallis, who managed just a couple of runs in his short stay at the crease.

With three wickets down and just 90 runs on the board, the Proteas were in a spot of bother. However, Amla and de Villiers steadied the ship, scoring a brilliant century partnership. They put on 147 runs for the fourth wicket and threatened to take the game
away from the opposition.

Things changed at the start of day four of the match though, as the Kangaroos bounced back with a few quick strikes.

De Villiers was dismissed for 73 and this saw a collapse in the middle-order, as wickets started to fall at regular intervals.

Ashwell Price was unlucky to be dismissed on two and was followed by Amla, who had scored a brilliant innings of 105 runs.

The last recognised batsman in the South Africa line up was wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, who scored 13 runs in an unimpressive outing.

This put the visitors under full control of the match, but Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn put together 48 runs for the eighth wicket, guiding the team into a very good position.

They scored 23 and 41 respectively before the innings was wrapped up on 339.

Australia’s debutant Pat Cummins was the star of the show, picking up six wickets in the innings.
