LIVE – South Africa v Sri Lanka – 1st Test – Lunch – Match Update

South Africa were steady against Sri Lanka on day two of the opening Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday, December 16, 2011.

The hosts now trail by only 12 runs with six wickets remaining in their first innings. Before the end of the morning session, they reached 168 runs for the loss of four wickets with Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers unbeaten on 28 and 10 respectively.

The pitch in Centurion had plenty of assistance for the seamers, as there was grass on it. However, the Sri Lankan bowlers were unable to cause too many problems for the opposition.

Night-watchman Dale Steyn was dismissed early in the day today. He came in to bat yesterday after skipper Graeme Smith was sent back to the pavilion just moments before close of play.

Steyn would have liked to stay a bit longer in the middle, but had a terrible mix-up with Jacques Rudolph and was run-out without troubling the scorers.

Hashim Amla was the first big wicket of the morning for the tourists. He departed after adding 18 runs to the total with the help of three boundaries.

The stylish batsman has been in tremendous form and has the ability of scoring big centuries. However, he was unable to make most of the start today and attempted to drive a length ball, which was not full enough to be hit.

He only managed to find a thick edge of his bat and the ball flew to the hands of the third slip fielder Angelo Mathews, who held a lovely catch.

Next to go was Rudolph, who batted for quite a long time, but still managed to score only 44 runs. He was mostly cautious in his innings, but played a rash shot away from the body, throwing away an opportunity of scoring a big one.

This put the home side under some pressure, but Kallis and de Villiers steadied the ship with an unbeaten 32-run stand for the fifth wicket.

The former was a touch lucky, as he was dropped in the last over before lunch. He was earlier hit on the helmet by Dilhara Fernando and that seemed to have unsettled him. However, he will now look to capitalise on this chance and hurt the opposition.

Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera picked up a couple of wickets in the day, but will be hoping of scalping a few more in the second session.
