LIVE – South Africa v Sri Lanka – 3rd Test – Jacques Kallis reaches his 2nd double century – Match Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 were in a very good position against Sri Lanka in the final Test of the three match series at the Newlands, Cape Town on Wednesday, January 4, 2012.
The hosts stretched their first innings total above 400 in the morning session of the second day’s play, courtesy a brilliant knock by veteran batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/JH-Kallis-c1692, who brought up his second Test double hundred today.
Kallis ended day one on 159 and played attacking cricket, peppering the Sri Lankan bowlers to all parts of the park yesterday. His innings guided the team to 347 runs for the loss of three wickets at the end of the opening day.
The star player was a little cautious when he came out to bat today, as the opposition bowlers were trying to bowl within the stumps. He did not panic though and continued to rotate the strike over and hit boundaries when the ball was there to be hit.
Kallis’ patience was rewarded when he sliced the ball towards point area in the gap for two runs. He was batting at 199 before the shot, which took him to 201. His double ton included 29 fours and one massive six.
The 36-year-old would have been relieved with his batting display, as there was some pressure building up on him after a few unimpressive performances against Sri Lanka in the ongoing series. He had only scored 31 runs in the Centurion Test before getting a pair in Durban.
Critics wanted wholesome changes in the South African team after their defeat to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 in Durban, as they believed that young players should be given a chance to prove their mettle at the international arena.
However, the Proteas skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GC-Smith-c1473 said that there was no need to make too many changes, as the current lot of players were capable of challenging any opposition of the world.
The selectors also agreed with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Petersen-c1028.
The latter along with Kallis put on 205 runs for the third wicket partnership on day one and both players justified their presence in the side.
Petersen got out on the first day after getting his second Test century, but Kallis continued to hurt the opposition and crossed 200 with his classy batting.
