The Sri Lankan Lions had reached 105 runs for the loss of 2 wickets at the end of 25 overs.
Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and elected to bat first. The pitch at http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 had some assistance for the seam bowlers in the first hour of play, which did not allow the Sri Lankan team to get off to a flying start.
Openers Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga have been in tremendous form throughout the tournament for the visitors. However, they were not able to give a solid start to their team. Tharanga struggled a lot against the pace and swing of Zaheer Khan. The
left-handed opener was sent back to the pavilion after adding just 2 runs to the total from 20 balls.
The Sri Lankan captain walked out in the middle and he did not find the conditions ideal for batting either. However, the veteran batsman played sensibly and steadied the ship along with the flamboyant Dilshan.
After a 43-run partnership for the second wicket with his captain, Dilshan threw his wicket away. The dashing batsman was dismissed for 33 runs off 49 balls. He also managed three fours in his innings.
With two wickets down for 60, Sri Lanka were in a bit of bother. However, they had two of their best batsmen in the shape of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara on the crease who handled the pressure brilliantly.
Sangakkara kept on rotating the strike whereas Jayawardene was not in a mood to waste too many balls. The stylish right-hander had reached a run-a-ball 24 halfway through the innings with the help of three fours.
On the other hand, the Sri Lankan captain Sangakkara also looked in good knick with his 39 runs off 58 balls. The pair will look to take their score above 250 in order to challenge the strong Indian batting line-up.
