LIVE player analysis, Chris Gayle vs. Ryan ten Doeschate – ICC World Cup 2011
West Indies and the Netherlands, will face each other in their second tie of the ICC World Cup 2011 today. Both the teams were defeated in their first encounter with the stronger teams in their pool; http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 and England. Although, West Indies are one time Champions but from the past decade they have not shown a remarkable performance in any form of cricket.
The competing teams will largely depend on the batting strength of their top batsmen. Chris Gayle is one of the Windies’ key batsman, who has a brilliant batting record. The 31 year-old veteran confidently hits the ball all around the park, scoring runs at lightening pace. Having perfect timing, he scores at ease against the best of oppositions. The all-rounder possesses a variety of shots up his sleeve and has the ability to handle tough situations.
Gayle has shown an excellent performance in the previous World Cups with an average of 28.93 at a strike rate of 76.54 from fifteen games. He scored a century against minnows http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 and continued with his outstanding performance, hitting 58 off 79 balls against England in 2007.
Gayle has played 223 ODIs innings scoring 7919 runs at an average of 38.81 including 19 centuries and 42 fifties. Eight of the centuries were scored in the subcontinent which included six in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shivnarine-Chanderpaul-c90073 and Desmond Haynes. The hard-hitting batsman is the only West Indian player to hit 166 sixes in ODIs.  Having a splendid record of playing on the Subcontinent’s pitches the player will have a chance to show his best in performance in the third tournament of his career.
The former West Indian wicketkeeper Jeff Dujon speaks highly of Gayle, "His hard-hitting style can be devastating at the top of the innings. His experience will be depended on to power the West Indian batting. Likely team composition suggests that he will have to do a fair amount of bowling."
Ryan ten Doeschate, is one best batsman of Netherlands batting line-up, who prefers to play on the leg-side but also hits some magnificent shots on the off. He also serves as a medium pacer and is the holds the record for being the highest run scorer and leading wicket taker for his side. He manages to score in critical circumstances.
The right-handed batsman has played 28 ODIs scoring 1353 runs at an average of 71.21 including four centuries and eight fifties. Ryan hit his highest ODI score of 109 not out for the first time against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752 in February 2010. Ryan showed an excellent performance in the ICC intercontinental Cup 2005-06.
In five innings he hit 84, 158, 138 and 100 and finished the tournament with 259 not out, where http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756. Ryan won the ICC Associate Player of the Year award in 2010 in Bangalore.
Former Netherlands captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jeroen-Smits-c66916 while expressing his views about Ryan said, “He has a fantastic work ethic and worked his way up from best associate cricketer to one of the best one-day and Twenty20 players in world cricket. If he is still in the middle during the last 10-15 overs Netherlands have a chance in every game.”
Looking at his consistent overall performance, he was chosen for the ICC World Cup 2007 squad. ICC World Cup 2011 will be his second appearance in a mega event where he will have a chance to show his talent to the World.
While the two players might be big hitters for their own teams, it would not be right to compare the relatively inexperienced Doeschates with the likes of Chris Gayle. Chris Gayle stands in a league of his own however this tournament would be an opportunity for Doeschates to become the Gayle of the Dutch team.
