  1. dont get me wrong i absolutely love liverpool but the capital of culture thing isnt all that great. i mean of course its got the new shopping centre and everythings getting done up but half of the independant shops that contain most of the culture are having to close down because the cost of having a shop there has risen so much since its become capital of culture! basically the real culture is slowly being driven out of the city but im happy that its capital of culture just so people are more aware of what a great city it is :D

  2. The Council was run by idiots even before the arrival of thicko Warren Bradley as leader.

The title of European Capital of Culture 2008 was given to the city of Liverpool five years ago.  The first thing they did was to appoint some old AUSTRALIAN hippy woman (Robyn Archer) as Director (though she barely visited Britain, let alone Liverpool, even when she was collecting her fat salary) and a clueless YANK (Kris Donaldson) as head of  marketing.

(Er, surely the presence to the word 'European' might have given them the clue early on that they were getting it all wrong.)

Then they appointed a crazy assortment of 100+ numbskulls, dolts and carpetbaggers with no local knowledge, interest or indeed any apparent ability on an average salary of £42,000pa, far higher than the local average salaries of other Council employees

People of local origin were rejected for these advertised jobs, no matter how much expertise and experience they had in arts administration, events organisation, project management, etc.  The public fumed as public money was used to pay for flashy champagne and canapes parties from which people who had worked in arts and culture for years were excluded, the Culture Company cronies only invited their chums from London and Manchester!

The Culture Company committed one high-profile, embarrassing c**k-up after another with a depressing frequency.  They made the city a laughing stock.

First Robyn Archer went with an undisclosed but huge payoff, then Jason Harborrow (a tee-shirt salesman from Chorley who was Chief Executive of the Liverpool Culture Company) was toppled by a secret plot between Storey and Bradley which caused Harborrow to leave with £250,000 of public money in his pocket.  Kris Donaldson is now acting CEO of the Culture Company.

Though Bradley is a buffoon, the chief architect of all this mess is Mike Storey, who appointed Robyn Archer and the rest.  Despite being sacked for his unprofessional conduct in another scandal a couple of years ago, he has been given another important job, Member for Regeneration, and is unbelieveably to be made Lord Mayor in 2009!

As we say in Liverpool so very often, you couldn't make this up!

Needless to say, the Council has been dubbed the "worst-run council in the country" by the Audit Commission that is investigating its financial mismanagement.

  3. No Steve, Warren Bradley is actually a local Liverpudlian.

The council do need a good shake up I agree and still much needs improving.  Much has already improved, however, and I just hope it continues and we don't start to decline again.

  4. Yeah, I agree with you - it's looking pretty good now but will be so much better when everthing is in place.

Warren Bradley has proved himself to be a pratt and I think the 08 Culture Company would be better served if we had home grown leadership rather than an American (is he American  . . .?)

I went to see some friends on Sunday who were over from Alicante, Spain for the McCartney Concert - they were staying at the new Jury's Hotel next to the Echo Arena - the place looks fantastic . . . . . eat your hearts out Manchester!!

Edit: Hi Sarah, I know W Bradley is a Liverpudlian - I was referring to the head of the 08 Culture company who is an American - he was on Radio merseyside a few days ago and his local knowledge is very, very limited! It annoys me that they got an American in to do a job somebody local would have been able to make a better job of!
