Hello, can anyone tell me what it is like as an American to live in Monterrey, Mexico? I have lived in Xalapa, Mexico, but I could not really live live there again because it is very different than the US and I know that Monterrey is very "Americanized". Also, are there other job opportunities other than teaching English? Thanks

  1. you can't just go to mexico and get a job you have to get a form fm-3 and that can be hard to do.

  2. Well... you will need a visa.  Look up a local consulate and they will help you.  Good luck... they want $$$ and they are crappy about paperwork.

Monterrey is a real cool city.  Nightlife is great.  The city is surrounded by mountains.  Most of the city will feel dirty to you and traffic still scares the c**p out of me even though I have driven there a lot.  There are some areas that are more americanized, and I would stick to those areas... San Pedro, Santa Catarina, or Cumbres.

If you are single, expect the guys to be chauvinistic. Additionally, many jobs are male only or female only... and s*x discrimination is legal in Mexico.

It's a cool place... just visit first.

Unemployment is really high in Mexico... especially people in their 20's and 30's.

    Good luck!
