LOCOG distributes sand used at 2011 Visa FIVB Beach Volleyball Test Event - Olympics
Following the tremendous success of the Olympic Test event at Horse Guards Parade this month, the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG), in collaboration with the Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB), announced on August 22nd that
they will be donating the 2274 tons of used sand to several sports venues throughout London City. The Visa FIVB Beach Volleyball International event was held from August 9-14 and a huge amount of sand was transported from a quarry in Godstone, Surrey to the
Horse Guards Parade.
24 women’s beach volleyball teams from several parts of the world attended the Olympic Test Event in London. The sole purpose of the test event was to give a taste of the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games to participants. The event was successful in attracting
a lot of new fans to the Horse Guards Parade. Keeping this in mind, LOCOG and FIVB have decided to present another gift to fans. They have selected three sites to distribute the used sand of Horse Guards Parade, in order to inspire new players and fans to
the sport of Beach Volleyball. Following three sites will be supplied sand from the Visa Test Event Venue:
1-    Crystal Palace National Sports Centre,
2-    The Score Sports Centre in Waltham Forest
3-    Westminster Academy Sports Centre
The Director of London 2012 Olympic Organising Committee (LOCOG), Debbie Jevans, disclosed his thoughts about the distribution of sand. He stated, "We want to leave a legacy for sport after the Games in a variety of ways, so it is great that the sand from
our test event can be distributed to venues in this way, so the legacy can start to happen before the Games have even begun.   We hope that having these courts at different locations in London will inspire more young people to get involved in an exciting sport"
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive of Volleyball England, Lisa Wainwright, called it a wonderful way to inspire people to come to beach volleyball. She said it’s a novel idea from LOCOG, Sport England and Volleyball England to facilitate news places within 10
miles of Horse Guards Parade. She encouraged new comers to give the sport a try in order to meet new friends, to get healthier and discover a new sport for life. She also emphasised that this is the first set of legacies and there are more to come.
LOCOG is hoping to receive new players inspired by the Visa FIVB Test Event and the ‘Go Spike’ campaign, which was recently conducted by Volleyball England.
