LOCOG may increase parking fines - Olympics
It has been recently revealed by the BBC that the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games(LOCOG) is thinking about raising the parking fines during the London 2012 Olympic Games. The increase in fines is expected to be almost 50% of the previously
decided amount.
According to the BBC, the plan to raise the parking fines was the brain child of the LOCOG and the idea was unanimously agreed upon. This means that the places which previously had the parking fines of £130 will now be asking for the raised amount of £200
from parking offenders. The areas that have been targeted for the parking fines include the Olympic Route Network as well as the places that are located in the vicinity of the Olympic Games venues. Despite the fact that the agreement has been reached by LOCOG,
the decision still awaits final confirmation.
There has been talk from some groups that the proposal to increase the parking fines was a way to generate more funds or to make more money out of the Olympic Games. However, the LOCOG has been adamant about its stance that the idea is to keep traffic problems
under control and make sure that disruption is at minimum.
Paul Pearson, who is a vocal voice while speaking against increased parking fines, shared his views on the matter in the following words: "Transport for London and local councils are using the Olympics as an excuse to extract even more money from motorists
- who have already paid towards the Games. It is simply wrong - many motorists will receive fines due to new controls introduced suddenly. £130 is a massive deterrent as it is, especially in these times."
Specifically, the parking zones that come under the red light for the increased parking fines are the ones that have been newly created near the Olympic venues.
The Olympic Games are coming to the capital of England for the third time now. After playing host to the Games, London will have become the first ever city in the world to have staged the Olympics for three times.
