LOCOG unveil rules for Olympics volunteers – London Olympics 2012
The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games have recently revealed the rules that the volunteers of the London 2012 Olympic Games will be following while they work for the international sporting event.
However, these rules have not been very well received by the volunteers as they feel they are severely restrictive.
A spokesperson from the LOCOG commented on the matter in the following manner while talking to the BBC, “We understand that many of our Games Makers will want to use social media to share their exciting experiences at London 2012 with their friends and family.
As is standard in most organizations, we have provided some practical guidelines to give basic advice on interacting in a social media environment with the aim of protecting the interests of our workforce and operation.”
The rules that are to be followed by the athletes have been made available to them on the official website of the London Olympics Games.
According to the guidelines that have been provided to the volunteers, they cannot divulge into the details of the tasks that they would be assigned concerning the Olympic Games. All that the volunteers are allowed to say about their work is that they are
working for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The rules laid down by the Olympic Games take strong stance over the use of social media. The volunteers are specifically asked by the not to mention their job description in any form be it print, audio or visual medium. These rules have been made applicable
to a total of 70,000 volunteers that are to provide their services for the international sporting event.
The volunteers will not be allowed to make use of the social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter. This is not the first time that people involved with international sporting events have been banned from making use of such sites as athletes were
asked to refrain from using Twitter in the 2010 FIFA World Cup as well as the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The volunteers are also not allowed to give any details of their location during the time of the Olympic Games.
