LPGA Championship 2012: Cristie Kerr fires 70 in the opening round to stand 4th
American Cristie Kerr, who was a little disappointed after seeing her ranking tumble to the 7th place, shot a stunning 70 in the first round of the Wegmans LPGA Championship to stand tied for the 4th spot on the leaderboard.
Kerr looked in great form, as she made balanced strokes on almost all the holes. She faced some pressure from her nearest rivals, but managed to stay strong throughout most of the day.
The tournament, being played at the prestigious Locust Hill Country Club, New York, is featuring top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars.
Some of the big names include the current world number one Yani Tseng, Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen, Lexi Thompson, Karrie Webb of Australia, Ai Miyazato and others.
Kerr kicked off the round in an impressive style, as she shot her first birdie on the 2nd hole. She faltered on the 3rd, as she could not judge the ball properly and ended up recording a bogey.
She regained her composure and drained two birdies on the par-5 4th and the difficult par-3 5th hole. With strong winds whipping through the course, the American star made careful strokes and her putting was exceptionally good.
Kerr could not perform well on the back nine, but thanks to her stunning performance on the front nine, she managed to stay in a good position.
Speaking to the media at the end of the opening round, Kerr said that she was thrilled about what she did on the front nine of the round. However, she lost momentum on the back nine, which kept her from grabbing the top spot.
“I didn't play that great on the back either. I seemed to hit pretty good tee shots that would end up like a foot in the rough in some gnarly lies,” the golfing sensation shared.
“I just managed really well. I didn't play a very good hole on the 13th at all and I managed to get out of there with a bogey which was the best I was going to do, but I ended up staying patient and being kind of happy with that and saying there were some
birdie opportunities coming in”.
