LPGA Legends Event at The Rail cancelled
The LPGA Legends event has been cancelled this year due to the lack of sufficient sponsorships.
The one day event is considered to be a major effort to fund various charities. It is a scheduled event on the LPGA tour calendar and is regularly attended by the players. The proceeds and monies go to the prescribed charities.
Early this year, the management announced that the event was scheduled for September 3rd. To the surprise of many, the event failed to secure appropriate sponsorships.
The timeframe was exceeded and the management decided to drop the event, rather than to organize it at a loss.
Still the management has not given up the idea. They are confident that major sponsors will step in time for the 2013 event. The 2012 event had to be scrapped because of the lack of funds.
The charity that was selected for the benefit was the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Memorial Affiliate. This Illinois based trust is very active in the fight against breast cancer. The trust management is disappointed by the cancellation of the event, but
is also hopeful for the next year.
Linda Maricle, Executive Director of the Komen organization said, “The reason for the change is, it gives us time to gain more clout with a new sponsor. We’re looking forward to this. This is so important for us at Komen because of our mission”.
The LPGA Legends Event is very popular among the players and many winners of the major titles had confirmed their availability for the event. This is a great demonstration of the community sprit among the players on the LPGA Tour.
The Director of marketing for the Legends Tour, Sue Fracker said that the decision to drop the event was made earlier this month when it was clear that the funds available for the event will not be sufficient for a successful organization.
Fracker was hopeful that the event will return in 2013. She said, “I think it was decided that next year would be better because (the event) would be coming in from a stronger position in terms of support”.
