LPGA Lotte Championship: Michelle Wie misses cut in hometown
Michelle Wie, who was hoping to take advantage of her the home crowd at the LPGA Lotte Championship, being played at Ko Olina Golf Club Hawaii, failed to make the cut.
American Wie was one of the hot favourite players in the $1.7 million tournament, but she performed worse-than-anticipated.
Wie kicked off the first round in an unimpressive style, as she carded a 78 to mess up her position on the leaderboard. The American’s fans were deeply disappointed when she shot two double bogeys on the front nine of the opening round.
The famed golfer tried to offset the impact of her first double bogey made on the second hole, as she drained a birdie on the third. However, she faltered on the hardest par-3 fourth and ended up shooting another double bogey.
After parring four straight holes, Wie let down the spectators yet again on the 9th hole, as she carded a bogey.
Analysts said that Wie was not expected to perform so unimpressively, as she could have capitalised on the support given by her hometown fans.
The Hawaiian-born golfer had vowed to do her best at the LPGA Lotte Championship in one of her interviews.
She had said that she was confident enough to battle LPGA giants. Analysts said that Wie knows the course well, as she grew up playing here.
Wie had said that she was extremely thrilled to see the Lotte Championship coming to her hometown, which meant that she had plenty of chances to record a victory for her fans and family.
"I was so excited when I heard that Lotte and the LPGA were coming back to Hawaii especially at Ko Olina. I was so excited when I heard that Lotte and the LPGA were coming back to Hawaii especially at Ko Olina,” the 22-year-old said.
Wie had to face tough contenders such as the current world number one Yani Tseng, Suzann Pettersen, Paula Creamer and Lexi Thompson.
However, after the Kraft Nabisco Championship, Wie had admitted that she had a long way to go before she could make up her mind about winning tournaments.
“It's been back and forth for quite a long time, which I don't like doing, but I had to find something comfortable. I have to trust my instincts," she said.
