LPGA star Azahara Munoz keeps moving ahead
Spanish Azahara Munoz, who started her 2012 season in a stunning style as she won her first LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) at the Sybase Match Play Championship in May, has finally proved her critics wrong about her performance.
Munoz is brimming with confidence these days because, in addition to recording her maiden LPGA triumph at Sybase Match Play Championship, she performed above average at the US Women’s Open 2012 — something that has helped her gain confidence.
The current season has seen Asian players consolidate their positions in world rankings, which has been a little challenging for European and American contenders. Although the Spanish star has been able to boost her standing in the past few months, many South Korean players have emerged as a threat. They have knocked most of the non-Asian players off the top spots.
Munoz currently ranks 14th in the Women’s World Golf Rankings. She is among the few non-Asian players in the top 20—something that reflects how hard it is for the Spanish star to cope with all the pressure and attention.
So far, the LPGA titan has been going well. The last tournament she participated in was the US Women’s Open 2012, which proved lucky for her.
Although she was not able to finish inside the top-20, she still played a far better game than most of her fellow Europeans and Americans.
Munoz has been quite concerned about her training, as she said in one of her interviews that she liked to spend most of her day on the practice range. She said that she spent most of the last winter in training, working on her putting and swing skills.
“I practiced really hard over the winter. I was working really hard, but Australia and Singapore and Thailand I didn't play my best, so I was getting a little impatient. But in Phoenix I actually played really bad and my attitude was really bad,” the ambitious golfer said.
“So when I go to San Diego, I completely switched and said that I was just going to enjoy it because I was miserable out there on the golf course. So ever since then, I've just ‑‑ everything click all of a sudden, and if I miss a shot, I just don't get upset”.
