LPGA star Na Yeon Choi eyes top spot
Na Yeon Choi, who currently ranks second in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, is in the roster at the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic, scheduled to be held from from April 26-29, at Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course.
Choi belongs to South Korea and has been playing pro golf on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour and LPGA of Korea Tour.
Choi has been chasing the current world number one Yani Tseng, who has stood firm at her position for the last 63 weeks.
The Mobile Bay LPGA Classic is going to kick off this week without the Taiwanese star in the roster. Meanwhile, Choi is being expected to capitalize on her absence.
Analysts said that the tournament will certainly not be devoid of challenge, as the field is still strong due to the presence of most of the top-ranked LPGA stars.
The players who are confirmed to participate in the event include Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Christina Kim, So Yeon Ryu, Si Ri Pak, Lexi Thompson, Angela Stanford and others.
Another key player will be Maria Hjorth. Hjorth is the defending championship of the tournament, as she played amazingly well in the field comprising battle-hardened contenders.
Despite the strong field, Choi is confident to take on the contenders, as she has shown in the past events that she can give a tough time to any player.
Turning professional in the 2007 season, the South Korean star took part in the Hana Bank-Kolon Championship.  Having racked up 5 titles on the LPGA Tour, Choi is considered one of the hot favourite contenders in this week’s tournament.
In addition to proving her worth on the LPGA Tour, Choi won 7 titles on the LPGA of Korea Tour.
The 24-year-old star came close to inflicting a defeat on the top-ranked Tseng in the 2012 RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, highlighting that she poses a serious threat to big names.
The world number two has made some changes to her putting and swing recently. She said in one of her interviews that she is now more confident than before, as she can make a putt the way she wants to.
“I changed the putter in January. I used a Taylor Made putter, and I changed it to Bobby Grace. The putter from my swing coach, he used it a really long time ago, almost ten years ago. It looks not pretty,” Choi said.
