La Aguada heats up with 11-10 victory over Pilara Piaget in the Argentina Open Polo Championship
La Aguada is heating up once again in the 118th Argentina Open Polo Championship, as it won its first encounter against the struggling Pilara Piaget side by 11-10, at the Campo Argentino de Polo (Cathedral of Polo), in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Interestingly, La Aguada opened the Hurlingham Open Polo Championship with a victory against Pilara Piaget by 12-8.
The La Aguada victory was not unexpected at all but Pilara Piaget put the former team in a shock, reducing the difference to a single goal in the final set of play.
Regardless of Pilara Piaget losing the game, it made a fantastic start, leading the first set of play with a difference of a single notch.
Piaget came out strong by scoring its first two goals only a few minutes into the first period, as Hilario Ulloa and Bautista Heguy potted one goal each for their team.
La Aguada earned its first score with a field goal from Ignacio Astrada. The first period completed with Piaget sitting ahead of La Aguada by 2-1, on the scoreboard.
The two teams exchanged a single goal, taking the score to 3-2. Heguy was the point scorer for Piaget while Javier Astrada earned a notch for La Aguada.
After trailing by a single goal in the first two periods, La Aguada sped up its pace by accomplishing back to back attacks. The third set of play was dominated by La Aguada, that registered four goals, while limiting Pilara Piaget with only a single goal.
Javier Astrada (La Aguada) fired off the third frame with a brace of penalty conversions while his teammate, Ignacio Toccalino, joined him with a field goal.
Luke Tomlinson managed a penalty conversion, that was the only notch for Piaget in the period. With another goal, Toccalino closed the third frame with La Aguada hanging onto a two-goal, 6-4, advantage.
Pilara Piaget once again started playing defensively in order to tackle La Aguada’s attacks. It was a low-scoring period where only two goals were scored in the seven and a half minutes of play.
Toccalino was the point scorer for La Aguada while and Tomlinson lit the lamp for Pilara Piaget. After the first half, La Aguada was enjoying a two-goal edge, 7-5, over Pilara Piaget.
The two foursomes struck one goal each again in the fifth set of play, taking the score to 8-6.
In the sixth frame, Javier Astrada and Eduardo Astrada scored one goal apiece, expanding the lead for La Aguada. In counter-offence, Ulloa notched a goal for Piaget, closing the period with his team trailing by 10-7.
After a brilliant show, the duo once again swapped one goal in the second last period. La Aguada maintained its lead by 11-8, with one chukka left to fight.
Entering the final frame, 11-8, Piaget’s players were extremely tense about the idea of them having to score three more goals just to level the results.
Ulloa and Heguy joined hands with one goal each for Pilara Piaget, but they still lost the first match of the Argentina Open Polo Champions to La Aguada by 11-10.
