La Collina to try luck in Irish 1,000 Guineas at Curragh
Kevin Prendergast’s 3-year-old filly, La Collina, is geared up to fancy her chances in the upcoming Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas, scheduled to take place at Curragh on Sunday, May 27th.
The filly is full of spirit following her impressive effort at Newmarket, where she finished fifth in the Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes (British Champions Series) earlier this month.
La Collina was pretty impressive early in the race. She maintained the standards during most part of race, but started struggling in the final stages of the event. As a result, she finished fifth by ¾ a length.
According to the trainer, the ground was too soft for La Collina, but still she managed to perform well. Expressing delight over his charge’s reasonable show despite the unfavourable conditions, Prendergast confirmed that the filly will be a part of the
Irish 1,000 Guineas on next Sunday.
"She's come out of Newmarket very well and runs in the Irish Guineas on Sunday week. We'll just keep her ticking over. She's in good shape and seems to have come out of the Guineas well,” said the County Kildare handler.
He added: "The ground was too soft for her for a start, but then again it was soft for them all. She likes fast ground and hopefully it's supposed to be dry next week and we might get a good track."
La Collina made her comeback after staying out of action for more than eight months. Prior to her act at Newmarket, the filly was seen at Curragh, where she ended up third in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes last season.
The Joerg Vasicek-owned made an astonishing start to her career last year. After making a winning debut at Limerick in June 2011, she continued her good work and did well at Leopardstown the following month. The Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes saw her missing
the gold medal by a neck’s distance.
The filly registered her second success at Curragh, where she beat the 7-4 favourite, Power, by a neck’s distance in the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. She has a great record at Curragh and therefore, the connections are expecting her to enthral in the
imminent mega event.
