La Irenita not disappointed despite losing the 47th Abierto del Jockey Club – Polo Update
In spite of losing the title of the 47th Abierto del Jockey Club at the hands of La Dolfina after a tough competition, La Irenita, the defending title holders were not disappointed over the defeat and committed to produce fruitful results in the
Triple Crown.
The Adolfo Cambiaso-led La Dolfina lifted the title of the Abierto del Jockey Club after beating La Irenita 15-13 held at the field of Jockey Club in Buenos Aires. Salvador Ulloa, from La Irenita while commenting on the situation stated that it was a great
game but their contenders were very talented and experienced polo pros. In his view the main thing behind their defeat was that they failed to convert all the opportunities earned in the six chukkas. He further commented that they flexed their muscles in the
last two chukkas and that if they would have played the entire game aggressively they might have earned a draw.
While referring to the missed opportunities, he said, “Although there was wind blowing, you didn't notice it much on the field, and we missed the penalty shots because we shot badly.” In the meantime replying a query regarding forthcoming Triple Crown, the
La Irenita player stated that La Dolfina and La Ellerstina are the two best squads and will play the title-claiming games. He further said, “I see Hilario (Ulloa, his brother) playing well, his team (Pilara) has three youngsters teamed up with Bautista (Heguy),
they are going to go all-out for victory, I hope they do well and become the eye-openers of the Triple Crown.”
Tomas Gandara, the player named as best in the title-claiming match stated that the opposite team took the game into their favour in the opening chukkas and that was a big shock for them. In response they started making a comeback into the match but it was
too late.
He opined that the outcome could be different if they availed all the chances particularly the short corners. If all opportunities were availed, the result could have been a lot different. He maintained that they played open style polo against Cambiaso who
is considered a superb player in the recent history of the sport.
Commenting on the forthcoming mega event of Triple Crown, Gandara commented that La Dolfina team looked quite powerful at first sight. However, Ellerstina was also quite competitive and has the capabilities to win the honour. He further added that the teams
including La Aguada and Estancia Grande also have an impressive record and can make an upset in the high-profile Argentina season. All six teams are outstanding but La Dolfina is standing at the forefront.
