La Liga: Barcelona’s President says Fabregas deal may not happen this summer
Barcelona’s new president Sandro Rossell has signaled that Cesc Fabregas might not come to the Catalan club this year. Ever since, Barcelona took on Arsenal in the champions league quarterfinals in the previous season, transfer rumors surrounding the Spanish midfielder have been ripe.
Fabregas joined Arsenal in 2003, when he was just sixteen years old. Fabregas has been a lifelong Barcelona fan and played for their youth sides from 1997 till 2003. He started his career as a defensive midfielder but he was renowned for scoring goals as well. He is well known for scoring around 30 goals in one of his seasons for the Barcelona youth teams.
Fabregas modeled his game around his idol Pep Guardiola, who used to play for Barcelona in a deep lying play-makers role. Fabregas transferred to Arsenal in the summer of 2003 from Barcelona, after he sensed that it might not be possible for him to breakthrough into Barcelona’s first team.
The Catalan midfielder, derives his heritage from the club as well because he was born in Vilassar de Mar which is located on the coast, situated North East of Barcelona. Barcelona have been insistent in their approach for Fabregas throughout the summer so far. When their new president Sandro Rossell took over in June, he expressed his desire to bring Cesc back to Barcelona, where he played his youth football.
In Fabregas’s first season at Arsenal, Fabregas only made 3 first team appearances. His proper breakthrough to the first team came when Arsenal’s captain back then, Patrick Viera was sold to Juventus by Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger. The 2005-2006 season for Fabregas was very fruitful in terms of first team appearances as he made 50 first team appearances for Arsenal. However, his most productive season in terms of goals has been the 2009-2010 season, where he scored a total of 19 times of Arsenal in 36 first team appearances.
Recently, Fabregas has been closely linked to a move away from Arsenal. The main cause of this speculation has been Arsenal’s on-going trophy drought. Since the past five years, Arsenal have not won any major trophies.
Recently, Sandro Rossell came out and said that it might not be possible for Barcelona to sign Fabregas this summer. He said that, ties between Arsenal and Barcelona had been damaged because of the on-going gossip regarding Fabregas’s possible transfer to the Catalan club. He added that, Arsenal are not willing to listen to any offers for Cesc and that they are not even opening up the option of putting their young captain on the market.
Rossell also stated that it is inevitable that Fabregas will someday arrive back to Barcelona. He remarked that whether it is this summer or the next, it is only a matter of time that Fabregas comes back home to Cataluña. He also made it clear that, Barcelona will not go mad in their approach for the player. He affirmed that Barcelona will not go all out for Fabregas at the present moment in time, saying that no shareholder at the club is willing to pay around 60 to 70 million Euros for the player.
Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona transfer has an uncanny similarity to the Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid transfer saga which eventually culminated in the Portuguese winger’s sale to the Madrid club. Barcelona quite like their rivals Real Madrid are consistently chasing a player who has expressed his interest in playing for them.
In the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga the player didn’t leave Manchester United for Real Madrid for over three years. Will this be the case with Fabregas as well? Only time will tell whether Arsenal are as resilient in retaining their star midfielder as United were with Ronaldo.
