La Liga News: Luis Fabiano destroys Tottenham hopes by renewing contract with Sevilla
Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano has confirmed that he has signed a 2 year contract with the Spanish club Sevilla in the Primera Division. The La Liga team finished 4th last season and therefore had a chance of playing in the Champions League, however their opponents proved to be too good for them, surprisingly knocking them out of the tournament this early.
The Brazilian super star was speculated to be making a transfer from Sevilla as his contract was finishing in June 2011. There were a number of clubs that were interested in buying him and they even presented bids for the players but Sevilla came on board and Fabiano failed to collaborate on the issue. It seemed as though either talks were taking place behind curtains or that a massive deal was about to be signed at a major club.
Now however, Fabiano has committed himself to the Andalusian jersey and surprised everyone. His rise to fame has been a gradual process as his performance has become brighter with the passage of time. But it was the FIFA 2010 World Cup where the Brazilian international shone and impressed all.
With this, the player had bids coming in from Manchester City, Real Madird, Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan. The 29 year old player joined Sevilla from Porto in the summer of 2005. During his period with Sevilla he has helped the club win 2 UEFA Cups, two Copa del Reys and European and Spanish Super Cups.
The latest transfer rumour revolving around Fabiano was a call from the Tottenham Hotspurs’ manager Harry Redknapp. The 62 year old manager had stated that he was very interested in the signing of the striker but his price was too high. The club has apparently set a 25 million price tag on the striker which so far has not attracted any official bids.
Redknapp commented by saying that the striker was overpriced and though he was willing to pay for him he would not be paying the price Sevilla had announced. Sources revealed earlier in the season that the striker had been linked with a move to Tottenham.
Luis Fabiano who has acquired 95 goals for Sevilla in 191 appearances stated with regard ot the issue that, “It's a very happy day. This is my home, I've been here six seasons and I will try to continue scoring goals and continue making history for Sevilla. It's a very special day for me”.
He went on to comment on his resigning to Sevilla by saying, “My first option was to renew with Sevilla. I rejected many offers and there were many interested teams. My desire was always to be here and what's true is that we have made a great effort to renew the contract”.
Fabiano praised the club and stated that Los Palanganas had given him much and it had become like a home to him where he had many happy times with the squad and on the field. He added that he had won many trophies and awards here and for now he would like to carry on with the club, “Sevilla have given me everything. When I arrived here the fans didn't think much of Luis Fabiano, because at my two previous teams in Europe (Porto and Rennes) things didn't go well. But here I've returned to the national team, I've won many titles...I owe a lot to Sevilla, that's the truth”.
Sevilla will have to rejuvenate as a team though, in order to get over their shock defeat against Braga in the Champions League play-offs. Sevilla also lost against Barcelona last week in a attempt to win the Spanish Super Cup. Though they put in a good effort, the Catalan side was just too star studded and ended the match at 3-1.
Their next aim will be to get their hands on the Europa Cup. Lady luck seems to have deserted them as they have been drawn in a tough Group. They have been placed in Group J and along with them are Paris St Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Karpaty Lviv, all teams that are considered powerful underdogs back home.
Still Antonio Alvarez and his men are looking good now after a strong victory of 4-1 against Primera Division. About his future with the club Fabiano confirmed, “My first objective is to continue scoring goals and after be in the Champions League next season and win a title, which is very nice’.
