La Liga: Pique says Liverpool are testing Fernando’s loyalty levels
Gerard Pique, the Barcelona centre back has recently come out and expressed his views about Liverpool’s star striker, Fernando Torres’ decision to stay at the Merseyside club while talking to the British newspaper, Daily star Sunday. Gerard
Pique and Fernando Torres hail from two different sides of Spain, Pique is a pure Catalonian whereas Fernando used to play for the Madrid club, Atletico Madrid.
Over the years, Madrid and main land Spaniards have had political differences with the separatist Catalonians. At times this rivalry has spilled over into football as Barcelona; representatives of Catalonia have constantly been on top
of the Spanish football hierarchy for the past four to five years.
Fernando Torres spent his youth footballing career at Atletico while Pique was a part of the famous Barcelona football academy which has bred the likes of Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez along with Sergio Busquets. Torres and Gerard
Pique were also a part of the same national team in summer as Spain lifted the FIFA 2010 World Cup. The world cup triumph was their first ever world cup win as far as football history is concerned. In the summer transfer window, while Spain were in South Africa
competing for international football’s most coveted prize, speculation surrounded Fernando Torres’s future as a Liverpool player.
Liverpool have had a terrible start to their season as they have already lost to the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City. Roy Hodgson took over as club manager at Anfield in the summer after leaving his previous club Fulham
but so far the Englishman has had a tough time at the Merseyside giants. Liverpool’s previous manager, Rafael Benitez was relieved of his job as the club’s manager earlier on in the summer after the Reds finished at the 7th placed spot
in the English Premier League season which concluded in May, 2010.
Pique told the newspaper that, Fernando Torres is a top quality striker and thus such a situation like the one at Liverpool is not best for him. The centre back revealed that he spoke to the ex-Atletico Madrid player before Fernando committed
his future to Liverpool F.C. Gerard said that, Fernando told him that he wanted to achieve success with Liverpool through winnings trophies. Gerard was bordering on offensive when he said that, it is actually quite embarrassing for Torres to play in a team
which has the quality levels of Liverpool.
The Barcelona player went onto say that one does not see the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi in the UEFA Europa League and thus there is no reason for Fernando Torres to be playing there. Pique was appreciative of Torres’s talents
as he stated that the Liverpool man was best in the world alongside David Villa. Gerard Pique, who used to also play for Manchester United in the English Premier League, went onto say that Fernando Torres, should be winning this in the league he plays in,
like he does on the international level with the Spanish national team.
Pique went onto say that, Liverpool have shown with their performances this season that they are not good enough to win trophies. In the summer it was revealed that Torres signed with the club for another season but only due to the promise
that the club will invest in players and win more trophies than they did in the previous two years. Gerard Pique expanded on this and said that, Liverpool are experimenting with Fernando Torres’s loyal levels. He added that for the last two seasons Liverpool
have promised their front man that they will win things but they have not delivered on their promises.
The Spanish national team defender said in his interview that, Fernando Torres might leave next summer and in that case there should be no questions from Liverpool. He said that Torres is a decent person who might join Barcelona if he
wants to win league titles or European Cups.
