La Liga: Xavi Hernandez says Arsenal are just delaying the inevitable
The highly underrated Spanish midfielder, Xavi Hernandez is the latest Barcelona player to have passed comments about Cesc Fabregas’s possible arrival at the Catalan club. Xavi, who was a team mate of Fabregas during Spain’s glorious World Cup campaign, was one of the most impressive midfielders at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
The Catalan born Spanish international, plays as a deep lying play maker for his club side Barcelona and occupies the same role with his national team Spain. Spain were seen by many as perennial under achievers on the International stage due to their consistent failure to perform at important tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup itself.
However, Spain performed remarkably well at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and eventually were successful at achieving their first FIFA World Cup final win. Spain started off their World Cup campaign with a defeat from Switzerland, but from then on, dramatically improved their form as they progressed in the competition. Spain defeated Honduras and Chile in their second and third group stage games respectively.
In the round of sixteen, Spain defeated Portugal and in the quarter finals, Spain knocked out Paraguay to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Spain faced Germany in the semi-finals of the tournament and defeated the Bavarians by a goal to nil.
Spain were pitted against Netherlands in the final of the tournament. The Iberian giants ran out as eventual winners thanks to Iniesta’s magnificent winning goal in the second half of extra time. Xavi was superb for Spain throughout their World Cup campaign. He completed and attempted more passes than any other midfielder in the World Cup.
Xavi and Fabregas are quite similar as far as their playing methodology is concerned, and there is speculation, that if Fabregas completes his move to Barcelona, he will find it hard to make regular first team appearances. The World Cup winning midfielder, Xavi recently told Daily Express that, players at Barcelona know that Fabregas wants to come to Barcelona this season. He added that perhaps the clubs don’t have enough time left to reach an agreement over Fabregas’s transfer to Spain.
Xavi also stated that, Arsenal need to understand that they are only delaying the inevitable. He explained that, if Barcelona don’t sign Fabregas this year, Arsenal will only have him for a year longer because in the next season’s summer transfer window, Fabregas will complete his move to the Catalonian giants. The Barcelona midfielder went on to say that he has not lost hope regarding Fabregas’s possible move to his home club this season.
The 30 year old playmaker further stated that during Fabregas’s time with the Spanish national team in South Africa, he made it quite clear to his team mates that he wanted to join Barcelona. Xavi also said that Fabregas will, under no condition, hurt Arsenal F.C’s fans. Therefore it is quite possible that Barcelona will have to practice some patience and wait for Fabregas.
Fabregas was bought by Arsenal when he was just 16 years old. The Spanish international midfielder, spent most of his youth playing for the Barcelona youth academy and is now a prime target of his home-town club.
