La Liga giants Barcelona tie Pep Guardiola for another year with contract extension
Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has agreed a one year extension to his existing contract with the club. According to the new contract, the Spaniard will remain at the Nou Camp till the end of 2011/12 season. Since his arrival at the club, Guardiola has preferred
short term contracts.
"This morning, (club president) Sandro Rosell and Pep Guardiola signed the contract that will guarantee the services of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Barcelona-c39078 manager until June 30, 2012," the club said in a statement.
Guardiola joined Barcelona in June 2007, as the coach of the youth team. After the sacking of Frank Rijkaard, Barcelona president Joan Laporta promoted Guardiola to manage the senior team in the 2008/09 season.
Guardiola’s first season performance with the club surprised everyone, when he won every trophy that came his way. He won the La Liga, the Copa Del Ray and defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the final of UEFA Champion’s League.
Barcelona became the first Spanish side to win three major trophies in a season, and Guardiola became the youngest manager to win the Champions League. The next season he won the Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and FIFA Club World cup to become the
first manager in the history of the game to win six trophies in a calendar year. He won the La Liga again in 2009/10.
In the current season Guardiola’s side are on top of the La Liga table, and are also in the final of the Copa Del Ray and last-16-round of the Champions League.
Guardiola started his playing career with Barcelona too; he developed through the youth ranks of the club. He played as defensive midfielder and remained at the club from 1990-2001. The Spaniard made 263 appearances for Barcelona and scored six goals. He
also helped them in winning six La Liga seasons and two Copa Del Rey trophies as a player.
Guardiola has been a great servant for football club Barcelona and at the age of 40, he looks to continue for many years to come. Football Pundits have tipped the Spaniard as an ideal replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson for Manchester United, as the Scott
is nearing his retirement.
