La Liga news: Xavi Hernandez wants to play with Wayne Rooney
Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez has expressed his desire to play alongside http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736. He believes that the Manchester United striker has what it takes to play for the Barcelona squad.
The World Cup winner has played alongside some of the best strikers during his illustrious career, but he ranks Rooney among one of the deadliest strikers in the world today.
Xavi is a living legend at Nou Camp. He currently holds the record for the most appearances for Barcelona. The midfield maestro knows exactly what is required to become a part of the Catalan squad, and he claims that Wayne Rooney has the skills needed to
be a success at the club.
Speaking on his admiration for the Manchester United striker, Xavi said, “Rooney is extraordinary, he could play for Barcelona. And before people imagine headlines like, 'Xavi says Rooney to join Barcelona' - although, I'd love him to! - what I mean is that
he's our (http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604’s) kind of player.”
Xavi, who was a finalist for the World Player of the Year 2010 award, is currently preparing for the UEFA Champions League round of 16 encounter against Arsenal. The midfielder will square off against his former colleague Cesc Fabregas when the two sides
clash on 15 February, 2011.
Fabregas has recently expressed his desire to rejoin Barcelona, a move which Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is not too keen about. The Gunners boss has been impeding Fabregas’ return to the Nou camp since the summer of 2010. It looks like the Catalan club
has finally given up the chase for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 captain. Barcelona director Raul Sanllehi recently conceded that there is no hope of a deal being struck for the player’s transfer.
Xavi said, “If I'd ever gone to another club, I'd have been thinking about Barcelona, the link is strong. The same is happening to him (Fabregas in Arsenal). But now there's a problem, now he's expensive. But I think that a footballer ends up playing where
he wants. He has to end up here (in Barcelona).”
Barcelona currently sit at the summit of the La Liga standings, seven points clear of their closest competitors Real Madrid. They are also favourites to progress to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League since they breezed past Arsenal in their meeting
in the 2009-10 season.
