La Liga round fifteen: Tops of the game
La Liga is arguably the most exciting league to watch with teams such as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona regularly wowing the Spanish crowds. In the 10 games that were played over the weekend, 35 goals were scored averaging 1.75 goals per team. Bettor.com now
presents the top players who took to the pitch on the weekend.
Diego Alves (Almeria)
The Brazilian shot stopper has had a poor start to the latest league campaign but over the weekend he was back showing his potential. On Friday, Almeria outclassed Sevilla away from home with a 3 – 1 score line and Jose Oltra has Alves to thank for the result.
The 25 year old saved a penalty from Frederic Kanoute with the score poised at 0 – 0 and that proved decisive in the second half.
Dani Alves (FC Barcelona)
Dani Alves has leapfrogged countryman Maicon into being the best full back in the world. The Brazilian enjoys a winger’s role with Barcelona and he was back to his marauding self on the weekend’s 5 – 0 demolition of Real Sociedad.
While Alves was relentless in attack all night, his sublime link up play with Messi for Argentine’s first was ‘Joga Bonito’ at best. Alves is in a contract dispute with the Catalan club and judging by the latest performance, Blaugrana would do well to tie
the wing back with a long- term contract.
Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)
The mercurial Argentine marches into every sensational football list by default. El Messias scored a stunning brace against Real Sociedad and was simply unplayable all night. While his first goal was a piece of superb link-up play with Alves, Messi returned
to his individual prodigious self for the second goal as he waltzed past the entire Sociedad back line and coolly slotted the ball past a hapless Erreala goalkeeper.
With the FIFA Ballon d’Or award ceremony coming up, Messi's chances of retaining the most coveted individual trophy are great.
Lassana Diarra (Real Madrid)
Lass’ first team chances have been severely hampered by the summer arrival of Sami Khedira and Xabi Alonso in the season past but the former Portsmouth star was given a chance by Jose Mourinho in the wake of Los Galacticos latest injury worries.
To his credit, Diarra was excellent all night as he barely missed a pass and his tremendous work-rate gave all the attacking freedom to his fellow attackers they wanted. On performances like these, Mourinho is likely to feature the French midfield destroyer
more frequently.
Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid)
The talented Argentine had been struggling with form and fitness for much of this season. In fact, the Rojiblancos number 10 has been struggling with fitness issues since the second half of last season. Diego Forlan was the hero for Atletico faithful last
season and following a stunning world cup campaign, the Uruguayan forward has left his shooting boots in South Africa and Aguero needed to rise to the occasion.
The Atletico fan favourite has done just that and on Saturday, the 22 year old sensation scored both the goals during Atletico’s 2 – 0 victory against a dangerous Deportivo de La Coruña outfit and was unplayable all night.
