La Salle enter the Final Four by defeating UST
A competitive game of volleyball was seen played between La Salle and University of Tomas this Sunday. In a match that went on till five sets, the La Salle women’s volleyball team emerged as victors at The Arena in San Juan. The end of the UAAP women’s volleyball
tournament match, the score board showed the final set scores of 25-20, 25-27, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12.
Prominent amongst the Lady Archers were Cha Cruz and Stephanie Mercado, whose play proved to be integral in the final two sets of the game. They also contributed significantly in the second set of the match, despite the fact of losing it. Cruz was able to
keep the score board ticking for the Archers by adding 17 points to it while Mercado stood firm in face of an aggressive Tigress attack by adding 15 markers of her own.
The first set of the match proved to be an easy win for the Archers. While the Tigresses kept up their play, they were not able to threaten the Archers considerably. Therefore, La Salle eventually secured a win at 25-27.
UST did not let the loss of the first set sit down well with them and rallied up their energies to put up a formidable fight against the Archers in the second set of the match. Even though the Tigresses were at a deficit of 12-19, they were able to close
in the gap and went on to win the set at a commendable 27-25. Things became interesting as the match reached a tie at this point.
Building on the momentum and confidence generated at the end of the second set, UST remained in control of the game in the third one as well. They were able to dominate the Archers who could not tackle UST properly. The Tigresses won the set by 25-18.
The pressure was at its peak for the Archers and they responded well to it by taking the fourth set at 25-22. At the start of the fifth set, both the teams were neck to neck and the score reached a tie at 10-10. However, La Salle was able to break away from
the deadlock with the controlled and focused play of Mercado, who gave the lead to La Salle by scoring twice. Michelle Gumabao sealed the deal for the Archers by making a decisive kill to score the last point of the match. The Archers won the last set by 15-12.
Sunday’s victory has enabled the Archers to enter the Final Four. La Salle will now be contesting The Lady Eagles in the semi-finals. The Lady Eagles have won eight matches this season at the expense of losing six. Let’s wait and watch how the Final Four
will fare for both the teams.
