Question:

Lab-created stone for my engagement ring?

I have my heart set on an emerald cut Mt. St. Helen's Emerald (obsidianite created using Mt. St. Helen's ash) because it's the color green I prefer and it has local connections. If we buy an engagement ring setting, will any jeweler set the stone for us or are we going to get loads of pressue to buy a diamond?

Also, since the stone is on the 5.5-6 MOHS rating, would it be better to get a platinum setting or is white gold ok?

  1. I wouldn't let it matter to anyone but you what kind of stone you get! If a jeweler pressures you to buy a diamond - walk away and go to someone else! Your ring, your choice of stone. I would go to someone that specializes in custom settings, rather than a chain. The chains will pressure you more while a custom jeweler is used to dealing with special requests.  They will also be better able to advise you on a metal choice.

  2. Private jewelers are understanding and deal with alot of heirlooms and diamonds, etc that have been in the family for decades and will design around them.

As far as white gold vs platinum, just depends on your budget. If you can afford platinum then go for it. Less maintenance and hassle and higher quality.

    All the best.

  3. Any jeweler who tries to pressure you into buying a diamond is not the jeweler who deserves your business.

Jewelers are very accustomed to having customers bring in stones that they want to buy a setting for.  In addition to the big name chain stores, be sure you check out some of your local independent jewelers.  They very often will have a better selection of settings than a chain store, and may even have artisans available to make a setting that you design.

Your engagement ring should be whatever stone you want in a setting that is special to you.  Enjoy your shopping!

  4. Any good jeweller will set any stone.

Emeralds look best in a yellow gold setting, though.
