Labour Talks between League, Players Association Die Out -NHL Lockout Update
With the last day of negotiations on a new labour deal between the National Hockey League (NHL) and Players’ Association being this past Sunday, it seems as if things have died down amid the stakeholders and seeing a regular season kick off just may be too
much to ask by fans.
The blame game continues between the two sides as players are saying that team owners are unwilling to compromise on certain issues that are negatively affecting them too much, while the league in return, regards the labour union as not wanting to negotiate
when the time comes around.
“The owners made it clear that there is no give with respect to any of their proposals,” Fehr said, according to newsobserver.com. “That unless players are prepared to take – and this is my phrase, not theirs – down to the comma, that there’s nothing to
do.”
On the other hand, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has suggested a moratorium for the talks between the two, in order to allow both of them to reassess where they stand and come prepared for a final meeting when the time actually does come. There is no guarantee
that this idea would work, but it is something the league is willing to bet on while players straight out reject the notion.
“I don’t know how you make an agreement if that’s their position,” Fehr said last Friday.
Team owners are still unwilling to show any resilience when it comes to the topic of player share in team revenue as they want another drop from the previous lockout, one that would lead to as much as 10 percent.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, asked Thursday by The Canadian Press about the CBA stalemate, said, “I’m more discouraged now than I have been at any point in the process.”
With such statements emerging, fans have now begun to lose any hope they did have in the past. As well as players, who had decided to hang out during the lockout, but are now contemplating a move overseas in order to continue playing and just leave all the
sorrow behind them.
Updates should be expected in the next couple of days.
