Labradoodle Question, Labradoodle?

I saw this really cute Labradoodle recently and fell in love with it! I was wondering if they would be good with me. My lifestyle:

Take it on 3 walks a day

Play ball with him as much as I can

Shave him in winter

Gone 7ish hours a day

Have time to train

I know there are big responsibility's like:

house training

No chewing

Animal/Kid friendly

Basic commands

No barking

There are many other animals ( dogs, birds, cats, etc.) around.

Please inform me about that breed ( activeness, playful, exercise, etc.)

If that breed is not for us, what do you think is?

Oh.. and could you add a link to some availible for ADOPTION in a SHELTER! thanks

  1. Sounds like you are pretty well set.  They are great dogs, although I wouldn't shave him at all.  Their coats are there for a reason and are not meant to be shaved off.  Although it's mixed with a poodle they usually take on more of the lab characteristics so no shaving.  They are somewhat to almost completely hypoallergenic, need lots of exercise and pretty easy to train.  They do get pretty big so you will need to make sure you have the room in your house.  If you have an apt I wouldn't suggest this dog.  Otherwise they are very smart, lovable, great with kids, could possibly drool a little but not always and are all around great family dogs.

  2. ok you said adoption and shelter and that is good news.  However, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but these (Labradoodles) are mutts, they are not breeds and have no standard to give the general idea of the dogs strong and weak points.  You are basically taking a chance, but you know what, you are not going through a breeder, so what I would do, I search on petfinder.com for labs or poodles with the other mixed in and go to that shelter and interact with the dog and see what you think.  Just b/c there is no standard does not mean that mutts are no good.

  3. My friend has two of them and they are great! They are pretty much the only dog breed that is allergy friendly and doesnt shed.

  4. Don't get him. He's technically a mutt that you're going to be paying a lot of money for, not a breed. Go to a shelter and get a lab mix or a poodle mix. www.petfinder.com is a great resource to find out where you may find some of these mixes. I'd add links to the ones I"m looking at, but I have no idea where you live. Plus, if you're gone for a 7 hour chunk of time in the middle of the day, it's not a great time for a puppy to be brought into your home. Consider an adult or young adult dog.

  5. I agree with GSD Fan.

Basically, as these dogs are Mutts (not a breed), you won't know what you're really going to get, as every single Mutt is different.

You won't know the temperament, personality or even looks when you get a Mutt.

However, it's good to see you want to rescue one instead of buy one from a BYB. Very good indeed. :]

Oh, and no need to shave your dog! A dogs fur actually helps them to cool down, as well as keeping them warm, plus if you shave their fur, it will never grow back properly. So there is no real need to shave their fur. But of course, they can be clipped.

If you're sure you want a mix of a Poodle and Labrador, then read up about both breeds. If you get a dog that's a mix of two different breeds, it's personality, looks and temperament will either be that of the Poodle, Lab, or a complete mix. You really don't know what you're getting.

Have a look, every Lab x Poodle is different.

Have a look on Petfinder, there are thousands of Pedigrees and Mutts who need homes!

And please, if you do get a Lab x Poodle, call it what it is, not a 'Labradoodle'.

    Good luck!

  6. go to borders or barnes and nobles and you can find tons of books specific to breeds - read the book BEFORE getting the dog (i did it the other way around - LOVE my dog.. but def. would have been more prepared had i read the book first.)

  7. They can be great dogs, but be aware that they are NOT a breed, they are a mutt so it's difficult to predict what they will be like, they can have the traits of either or both parents.
