Lacey Agnew fires 67 to tie for fourth spot in the first round of Manulife Financial LPGA Classic 2012
American Lacey Agnew was more than happy after she tied for the fourth spot at the end of the first round of Manulife Financial LPGA Classic 2012.
Agnew got off to a phenomenal start at the prestigious tournament being played at Waterloo, Canada, and ramped up pressure on her rivals by scoring well.
The rising star was in high spirits, as she was not expected to post such a good score on the opening day.
The first round was marred by a threat of lightening, as the forecast had warned a day earlier that the weather condition would worsen on first day of the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic.
The grim weather affected the match, as the tournament officials announced to abandon the first round. Several contenders could not begin their round, and it is expected that the results of the first round will see a significant change after all the players have completed their opening-round play.
Prominent players, who could not start their round because of the unfavourable weather, include Lexi Thompson of the United States and Paula Creamer.
Suzann Pettersen of Norway, who is struggling to improve her world ranking, cheered the spectators after she posted a stunning 67 to share the fourth spot on the leaderboard.
Analysts said that Pettersen appears to be in a great form, and getting off to a solid start in the tournament will help her maintain the momentum in the next three rounds.
Speaking to the media about her excellent performance, the Norwegian star said that her goal was to get off to a sensible start, which she achieved by shooting four birdies, and no bogey, on the front nine.
She, however, faltered on some holes on the back nine, as she made two bogeys on the 11th and 16th hole.
Golf commentators said that Agnew did far better than expectations, as she did not make lousy putts. Moreover, her swing was almost perfect — something that helped her score well.
The most notable performance in the opening round came from American Sandra Changkija, who shot a 63 to take a solo lead.
Changkija said while speaking to the media that she just focused on her strokes and played a natural game.
“Just going to keep doing what I've been doing, hit fairways, hit greens, just make a good stroke. I'm putting really well, I've got a new putter,” the American star said.
