Lachlan Wells wins Boys 100m freestyle gold: Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships
Lachlan Wells of Victoria earned the gold medal of Boys 100m freestyle final in the 14-15 years old age group category on the second day of the 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships on Sunday, September 18, at the Australian Institute
of Sport (AIS) in Canberra.
The 15-year-old Wells posted a top ranked time of 50.97 seconds for the title of the double lap event. His time was just 0.82 seconds slower from overwhelming the effort of Te Haumi Maxwell of New South Wales, who owns the age group record of the event for
posting a time of 50.15 seconds during 2009.
Wells was trailed by Jayke Rees of New South Wales, who remained only 0.21 seconds slower than him and reached the podium for silver medal by posting a time of 51.18 seconds. Similarly, Rees managed a lead of 0.19 seconds over his following swimmer and team-member,
Jake Hodgetts, who submitted a third fastest time of 51.37 seconds.
In the meantime, the fourth finest spot of the race was secured by Pete Topalidis of New South Wales, who remained 0.75 seconds slower than his former finisher and appeared on the wall with a timing of 52.12 seconds. The fifth fastest spot of the swim was
obtained by Ka Ho Kwong of Queensland, who stayed just 0.43 seconds behind Topalidis and concluded his swim in a time of 52.55 seconds.
Moments later, the arena witnessed the convincing effort of Kwong’s team-member, Ryan Parker in the two-lap sprint, as he was only 0.10 seconds slower than his foregoing finisher and posted a time of 52.65 seconds. Queensland’s Phil Soalheira was the seventh
finisher of the freestyle discipline, as he concluded his swim in a time of 52.70 seconds. The eighth spot of the race was obtained by Damian Fyfe of Western Australia, who clocked a time of 53.15 seconds.
The arena applauded for the noteworthy efforts of all participants, while the winners were invited on the medals rostrum for their accolades, after the session’s completion.
