Lack of pitching depth: An emerging problem for Washington Nationals-MLB Update
Trades carried out in the last couple of years by Washington Nationals have reduced the number of top pitching prospects in their Minor League farm system.
Understandably so, the officials of the club are conscious of the emerging problem.
As far as the bullpen is concerned, the Nationals have not much to worry about, except for the dearth of left-handers. However, when it comes to the starting pitchers, there persists a serious shortage in their farm system.
Apart from the five hurlers for the major league, there is hardly anyone who can replace one of them down the line. In the worst case scenario of some injuries, the Nationals will be in a serious trouble during the 2013 season.
Currently, a notion prevails around the Major League Baseball teams that Washington boasts by far a best rotation.
It is true to a great extent but the fact it does not incorporate the Minor League mediocrity concerning this department of the Nationals can create doubts about its authenticity.
During the season, manager Davey Johnson may confront various issues.
For example, resting some of the pitchers for a few games will not be possible for him. Resultantly, the performances of even the reliable pitchers of the team may be affected.
Johnson is not oblivious to the possible challenges ahead. He is looking forward to solidify the depth in the pitching department at some point in time during the offseason.
"And, depending on what happens, possibly go after some young starters. Depth-wise in the organization, we've good pretty good depth. The only area we're a little bit short in is starting pitching," Johnson said.
The 2013 Major League season is almost certainly the last season of Johnson with the Nationals. To make it worth remembering after he leaves the baseball world, he will go all out.
Fortunately for him, he has the team that consists of star players. Through proper utilisation of resources, he can help the club win some glory during 2013.
His performance as skipper in the last season was outstanding. The way he guided some of the young players in the club and made them deliver their best shows was incredible.
For the same reason, he was handed the responsibility to manage the team for another season by the top officials.
It will be interesting to see how he lives up to their expectations this time around.
