Question:

Lacking motivation to study?

There always seem to be so many more interesting things to do!!

I used to go to school but then left because I wanted to homeschool and switch to a better more thinking based versus memory based curriculum. For the first month or so the novelty of it was so exciting, I WANTED to study! But now, 2 months down the line, all I seem to be doing is procrastinating and avoiding studying altogether...

I've always had a problem with sticking it out once I start something, be it dancing, basketball or even school!! But Now I honestly need some help and advice.

Can anybody help?

  1. Find a "partner"--it's like for just about anything you do by yourself, it's always better to have a support system. This might be your mom or somebody you know.

Ultimately, though, you just have to MAKE yourself do it. Get up in the morning, plan your day and get to it. Don't let yourself do the interesting things until your work is done.

  2. I would suggest doing the schoolwork first and foremost, leaving you the rest of the day to play and relax. You might also find alternatives to learning certain subjects. Science, history, and geography can be fun;

Science experiments can be fun to do in the home. (just don't set things on fire)

History can include watching documentaries, visiting museums, and reading biographies.

Geography- We pick a country each week to study, which includes having a dinner of some ethnic foods, learning some words in the language, and looking at religion and cultural practices of the region.

Look up homeschool groups in your area to find others to form a study group. These can be real fun with the right people.

  3. The motivation has to come from you, not from others. We can suggest many ways, but at the end, you are the one who will choose to go back to studies or not.

Some people need schedules and other people that tell them to do things.

That is one of the things you learnt at school. Homeschooling is about freedom, but also about responsibility.

If you procrastinate is because you are either not so motivated to learn what you chose to learn, or you are not motivated by the methodology you or your parents are using. Try to change it. Try to do new things in new ways.

You also will see that once you have a goal (such as going into College), you'll be studying by yourself because you WANT to do it.

I also suggest that you take your time to read different books (from biographies to fiction, and then different subjects that may interest you). Books are the best way to pass time, learn and find motivation to learn more about a subject.

You can also try to do something in your community, sucha as volunteer in an animal shelter, a hospital, local library, special school or any other thing you feel you would like. You'll make friends there, will feel useful and busy and will find motivation to help others and learn more.

    Good luck

  4. Go get a job scrubbing toilets, working at McDonald's, or gathering cans along the road.  Then picture yourself doing this for the next 40 years.  This should be motivation enough in your pursuit of obtaining an education and degree.

  5. Make school fun!!

Read books about the topics, write creative essays relating to curriculum, do math problems about your everyday life, etc.

    That's all I can say!!

    Good luck!!

  6. Ultimately, successful motivation is intrinsic.  Which means that you have to find a personal satisfaction/reward from it.

What does it mean to you in the long run?

What goals are you working for?

What are you going to get out of it?

School really is a drop in the bucket as far as time goes.  And studying can be too.  Maybe you can look at it as a job.  This job is going to pay you (a shopping trip, free time, a special lunch?) each week for a certain amount of time spent working.  So what do you really need to do?  An hour a day?  An hour twice a day?

Be a boyscout!  Be prepared!  It makes every thing else easier and faster.  This will not be forever...

    Good luck to you!

  7. go somewhere quiet like to the library, somewhere avoiding all things that attract alot of your attention, alone will be better.

you will have to study, influence by the environment and people. If not get yourself a personal tutor to push and guide you.

Study hard! don't waste all your money on your education and books. you will definitely regret if your life continue to be like this.
