Lacoste Ladies Open De France 2012: Azahara Munoz takes share of second position in first round
Spanish Azahara Munoz shot a 66 in the opening round of Lacoste Ladies Open De France 2012 to take the share of second position along with three other contenders.
Munoz vowed to do her best in the Ladies European Tour (LET) event, being staged at Chantaco Golf Club, Aquitaine, France, and given the form the Spanish star was in, she did better than most
of her critics had anticipated before the start of the four-round tournament.
A 66 in the first round put Munoz in a comfortable position as she is now able to focus on improving her score in the next three rounds without any pressure.
Munoz did not look too fired up at the start of the tournament as all she could do was par the first six holes, which was not enough to boost her position on the leaderboard. She fired her
first birdie on the par-5 7th hole,
Although confident on most of the holes, she could not judge the ball well on the par-4 8th and ended up registering a bogey. Then on the par-4 9th, she sank the hole
in three putts, increasing her score on the leaderboard.
On the back nine, Munoz exhibited her natural game as she avoided making any bogey, but launched three consecutive birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th hole,
cementing her position on the leaderboard.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round, Munoz said that she could not get off to a fast start, but bounced back on the back nine and launched three much-needed birdies to ease some
of the pressure.
She said she is happy to take the share of second position, but conceded that some of her shots were grim.
“I finished with three birdies in a row, 15, 16, 17, so that kind of leaves a sweet taste in my mouth,” the Spanish star said. “I played kind of solid, but didn’t hit many good shots. I didn’t
make many putts at the beginning but at the end I started rolling the ball much better”.
Munoz has been training hard lately — and she has been able to fix most of the flaws that hampered her from showing a natural game.
When asked what her chances to win the tournament are, Munoz said she is not overconfident, but will try to put her best foot forward.
