This article is good example.

Most likely, it might of been the same issue with a white woman, but minus the racial harrassment.

  1. Yes, I think there is probably quite a bit of harassment for most women in traditionally male fields.  At the same rate I believe males who worked in female fields...such as child care would be discriminated as well.

The race issue is a whole other ball game.  The fact that NASCAR is a male dominated sport and the majority of fans and quite possibly the majority of employees are from the South and are more likely to hold prejudice viewpoints is more of a factor than this would be with many other companies.

As for the validity of this case, I am on the fence.  I am a NASCAR fan and would truly hate for this to be true.  It would only prove that NASCAR is still as backwards as many believe it to be.  However, I sadly I wouldn't put this past them.

I do think the timing of her suing has a large effect on her credibility though.  I think most people would have gone to the courts before they were fired.  Her filing a suit after being fired looks a lot like a revenge case and less like a credible case.

  2. Let me first say, that Im black.

I think that black women experience more discrimination than women in other cultures because of three reasons:

    1) We were raised to be dominate unlike women in other races so sometimes we can come off as being offense, but were really just being confident and strong. We can't help it. So I think most women (white, hispanic, chinese etc.) use discrimination as a way of defense.

2)In our culture the woman is usually domiant of the two sexes. It's not a bad thing, it's just like that for some reason. So when you put us in a room with men of other races where the male is dominate that can lead to confrontation.

    3) Not all people, but many people carry a lot of prejudice for black women; they except us to be ghetto, ignorant and sometimes even stupid or ugly. When they see that were not, they become confussed and have to challange us.

  3. Well it depends what kind of discrimination... I think the most common type of discrimination is the pressure to be thin, combined with the pressure to be wealthy. Black men face a lot of discrimination but not much is said against black woman.

[So Striegel-Moore and her team surveyed 2,046 young black and white women with an average age of 21, and found that black women were less likely to get certain eating disorders—especially anorexia. "We found no case of a black young woman with anorexia nervosa in this study," says Striegel-Moore. "We’re not looking at risk factors for anorexia nervosa in this study, but what may be going on is that black women are…under less pressure to be super thin. In fact, there’s quite a bit of research that shows that black women prefer to be moderately thin—they don’t want to be skinny-thin—whereas white women…you can never be thin enough, so to speak, as a body ideal. So as a culture, black culture may have protective factors, so that even if a black woman may have the genetic vulnerability to anorexia nervosa, it may not get expressed because she grows up in a context that may be protective."]

  4. Yes they are. When I was a manager we were taught to get the job done no matter wht. If a white guy wouldn't do give it to a black man next in line was a white woman & last was a black woman. I personally was offended. My boss said it this way the job comes first & that culturally that was how we all have been conditioned from birth. I am still offended but it is out of my reach these days I'm retired.

  5. Hmm, as a black woman I would have to say yes but it's not only black woman, it's other women of color who have faced discrimination from whites (including women) as well. However, I believe that when it comes to black women, it's a double edged sword because more often than not, people consider us on the bottom bottom of the totem pole because we are : 1) black & 2) female. It's a double whammy really. I heard about the NASCAR incident this morning on the news & I say go for it, she definitely should sue so just in case another black woman goes to work for them, they won't risk making the same mistake a second time.

    God bless.

  6. I'm sure there are many who dislike black women and I'm sure that many black women have encountered racism. However, I don't know if we could state with certainty that black women are the ones who suffer the most. I'm sure 50 years ago there would have been no dispute that black women suffered the most. My school has a considerable black student population and many black women are happy and are treated well by professors and classmates. What about Hispanic women? Do we encounter racism and prejudice? I don't think we can every find the answer to any of these questions because with each women, the experience is different.
