Ladies European Tour returns to Switzerland with Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open
Ladies European Tour (LET) returns to Switzerland with its third biggest title in terms of tournament purse, the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open at Golf Gerre Losone, Ticino.
Top players on the LET card will be locked to bag the lucrative title which will be held for the sixth time in continuation after its first edition held in 2006. The season on the tour has so far remained evenly poised with many of the rookies winning their
first titles to earn tour cards for the year.
Defending champion Lee-Anne Pace from South Africa will be hoping to retain the title she earned last year when she overtook Vikki Laing of Scotland with one shot. She has won five times in the previous season and is looking to jump start this year when
the season is still young.
Previous champions of the event, Bettina Hauert and Marianne Skarpnord are also hoping to repeat history again at the scenic Golf Gerre Losone. Hauert won the 2007 event at the Playoff hole when she took over Australian Anna Rawson and Spaniard Paula Marti.
Norwegian Skarpnord won the event in 2009 when she defeated Melissa Reid of England to lift the title. She won by one shot. Reid, however, will be coming into the tournament rejuvenated by her victory on the Deloitte Ladies Open 2011 at Rotterdam Netherlands
and will pose a formidable challenge to the rest of the field contending for the €78,750 winner’s share.
Becky Brewerton, who took over some of the strongest players in the field in last week’s Tenerife Ladies Match Play title, will be hoping to continue with her winning spree to confirm a place in the Solheim Cup scheduled later in the year. She also defeated
the 79-time LET winner Laura Davies in the Match Play opening rounds on a tight Playoff.
Also contending for the top slot will be Caroline Hedwall, Diana Luna, Ashleigh Simon, Christel Boeljon, Zuzana Kamasova, Kristie Smith and Reid who have all won an event on LET this year. Boeljon, who is on top of the Money list and is the winner of Turkish
Airlines Ladies Open at Antalya Turkey, boost of a splendid form and is one of the strong contenders.
Karen Lunn, Felicity Johnson, Minea Blomqvist, Linda Wessberg, Rebecca Hudson, Carin Koch, Louise Friberg, Lisa Hall and Anne-Lise Caudal are some of the other notable players in the field who will be hoping to summit the leaderboard this week. Spaniard
Carlota Ciganda, who finished second in her professional debut at Tenerife, is also participating in the event on official invitation from LET.
Local players on the professional circuit include Caroline Rominger, Frederique Seeholzer and Florence Lüscher, as well as 2011 rookie Melanie Maetzler and amateurs Anais Maggetti and Valeria Martinoli. Out of 126 total field, players from 25 nations are
representing their countries in the €525,000 title.
