Ladies' No. 1 Lorena Ochoa ready to retire from golf for good?
Mexico's Lorena Ochoa, the world's No. 1 woman golfer, is set to retire.
Ochoa has often spoke of her desire to quit the sport once she was ready to start a family, and that time seems to have arrived; last December Ochoa married AeroMexico CEO Andres Conesa.
A report earlier today in Mexican newspaper Reforma suggested the star had planned to take time out from the sport, rather than quit for good. The story quoted an unnamed source that suggested Ochoa wanted to spend more time with her husband, and also performing charity work.
“It is not a goodbye but a see-you-later," the source was quoted as saying, implying that Ochoa could return to competition in the future.
However, the following statement, released by Ochoa's representatives, seems to indicate the break is permanent.
“Lorena Ochoa has confirmed her retirement from the LPGA, as has been released today in some media quarters. The reasons and more details will be released on Friday at a press conference in Mexico City. Lorena gladly will share this news and the next stages of her career accompanied by sponsors, friends and family.”
The 28-year-old from Guadalajara has played four times already this year, though she is yet to win; her best performance thus far in 2010 came at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, where she finished fourth. Ochoa's official website currently gives no indication that she is about to quit the sport, the lead story suggesting she is preparing for next week's Tres Marias Championship.
